Penduka Women Poject:
PENDUKA is a non-governmental development organisation working with women in Namibia. In the Oshiwambo and Otjiherero languages the word Penduka means "Wake Up!" Through our programme we encourage and support women throughout the country to take charge of their lives. The aim of Penduka is to help women from all over Namibia to create their own jobs by becoming aware of, and building on, skills and resources that they already have. Until now over 500 women, working in 16 different groups all over Namibia, have been trained in different needlework skills and are paid a fair rate for the items that they make. Priority is given to women with disabilities and women suffering of tuberculosis (TB) and/or infected with HIV. These groups are very underprivileged in Namibia, they need urgently attention.
PENDUKA is based in Katutura, the former black township of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. We are beautifully surrounded by the Goreangab Dam. PENDUKA's products are sold in Europe. In The Netherlands we work together with the association Penduka Multicultural, while in Norway Isandi sells our products. We closely cooperate with our Namibian-Finnish partner Pambili. "Pambili" is an Rukwangali word meaning "in peace". Pambilishop works together with fair trade, industrial art and development cooperation organisations.
Tree sleepers campsite
The word (Treesleeper) has been derived from the biggest ethnic group in the village of Tsintsabis, the Hei//omn Bushmen. Treesleeper Camp is a form of what we call (community based sustainable tourism). This means that the members of a local community are involved in all the aspects of carrying out the tourist activities, so they can have some income of their own. They should have a fair income for all their labour activities. As much as possible will be done by the local community, and the FSTN has always paid extra attention to modern abilities (eg. working on a computer). By training and educating the local people, they will eventually be capable of improving their own situation independently and with responsibility.
When you visit Treesleeper Camp we can offer you three activities: A bushwalk, a village tour and a traditional performance.
